Public education is all about life lessons. Classroom lessons on reading, writing, problem-solving. Social lessons on listening, collaborating, personal responsibility. Physical lessons on movement, self-confidence, risk-taking. Cultural lessons on respect, acceptance, relationship-building.

2020欧洲杯线上投注As educators – and by educator, I mean anyone who touches the lives of students – it is our responsibility to guide students through all of these life lessons so that they graduate with the skills, knowledge, and ability to succeed in a highly competitive and rapidly changing world.

But what is guiding the educators?

Raquel Reedy smiling, talking with young students. That’s the purpose of the Albuquerque Public Schools Academic Master Plan, a roadmap for reshaping current teaching, learning, classroom experiences and schools to fulfill the needs of a future generation.

The Academic Master Plan2020欧洲杯线上投注 will guide us during the coming years as we serve the whole child. Students who have needs and values; who crave knowledge and acceptance; who struggle with self-regulation, self-confidence, and self-identity. They are ours – every single one of them. They are at the core of what we love about New Mexico, Albuquerque, our communities, neighborhoods, and families.

These students with their individual personalities wants and needs also are at the center of the Academic Master Plan2020欧洲杯线上投注, which is being designed to help us provide our students with these all-important life lessons.

This is their plan. And yours, too.

It is an organic blueprint developed with much input from those who have a stake in public education – teachers, social workers, counselors, principals and others in schools as well as parents, community members, business owners, even students themselves. We asked the public to imagine what skills, attitudes and characteristics a future graduate will need to be successful, and then come up with a plan for schools and the district as a whole to help students reach that level of success. The conversations were wide-ranging and are reflected in the plan.

Now that we have a clearer vision for making our schools high quality and community responsive, it is time to share these initial results and put the plan in action, keeping in mind that the Academic Master Plan will continue to evolve. We’ll continue to update it as it progresses, and we welcome comments and suggestions as we implement this plan for student success.

Let Us Know What You Think

The purpose of the Albuquerque Public Schools Academic Master Plan is to provide a roadmap for reshaping education so that our students are prepared to live and thrive in a competitive, ever-changing world. It is a work in progress that will continue to evolve as educators put it to use. As any traveler knows, unforeseen roadblocks and detours sometimes force a change in direction, and on occasion, a better and more scenic route becomes apparent.

2020欧洲杯线上投注[MONICA ARMENTA, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF COMMUNICATIONS] So Superintendent Reedy, what is it about the academic master plan that you'd like the public to know? Unless you're in education, I don't think most people have heard of an academic master plan. What should they know?

[SUPERINTENDENT RAQUEL REEDY] In the years that I've been in APS, we've had many different kinds of plans and if anything, I think we've done too much. We take on too much. And one of the things I wanted to do is to have a blueprint for us but I don't want to add everything but the kitchen sink and that's why we thought we'd have an academic master plan that identifies three to four areas that we want to concentrate on as a district. And it's just like building a house. The fact is, you really want to look at the foundation, you want to do your research, you want to make sure that we're headed in the right direction, you want to get feedback. All of that we've been doing, getting feedback from staff, from students, from parents. We've been going out and doing community forums so that we can hear from our constituents, what are the things that APS is doing right and well?

[MONICA ARMENTA, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF COMMUNICATIONS] I know one of the groups we started with was teachers because ultimately they implement the plan. So we get a lot of feedback from them. Are you excited about how they approached it?

2020欧洲杯线上投注[SUPERINTENDENT RAQUEL REEDY] I am very excited about this and I think the teachers are very excited about this. What had happened in the past, and again because there was rules and regulations and things that we had to deal with, a lot of this was coming to the teachers rather than from the teachers. So now we've kinda flipped that because who better knows what our students need and in what direction APS should go than the very people that are teachings our students, the parents of our students and our community members. So I'm very, very excited about this because we are getting some genuine information from the practitioners themselves.

2020欧洲杯线上投注[MONICA ARMENTA, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF COMMUNICATIONS] Do you think by putting a plan like this together that parents and students and the community can get a better idea of what needs to be done, instead of just some slogans that this roadmap helps them see along the way where the difficulties are and where they may even be a part of the solution?

2020欧洲杯线上投注[SUPERINTENDENT RAQUEL REEDY] What I think the beauty of this is that it really takes in the whole child. It's not a series of tests, it's not memorizing the information and being able to repeat that. It's really truly understanding but for a child to really understand material, you've gotta start, like I said with a house, you have to start with the foundation. We have to make sure that they have everything that they need, that they have their supplies, that the school itself is a welcoming place and not one that they fear or that they don't feel comfortable in or one where they feel they're going to be punished or anything like that. If I were to explain the beauty of this plan, is that we are looking at ensuring, first before anything, before any learning takes place, really, truly is ensuring that our students have the foundation that they need and that the school offers those kinds of qualities that help a student embrace learning.
